Part 2 of this series showed how to work out what a property costs you and what extra lawns per day are worth. This part looks at the labor side: how hard field crews are to keep, and what a ride-on spreader sprayer changes for the person running the route.
How hard is it to keep landscape field crews?
NALP's summary of its 2024 Compensation & Benefits Report, based on 2023 data from 169 organizations, put turnover in operations roles at 23% across all respondents and at 35% for larger companies. The same summary calls finding qualified employees a major challenge for landscape companies.
What changes when the operator rides?
On a walk-behind route, the applicator pushes a loaded spreader across each lawn, then drags hose or carries a backpack sprayer for the liquid and trim work. On the PermaGreen Triumph, the operator rides on an ergonomic standing platform with foam anti-slip footpads, at 3.5 mph in low gear or 5 mph in high. It steers and brakes like a bicycle or motorbike with an automatic transmission, and Smart Steer, PermaGreen's patented brake-assisted steering, adapts to the machine's weight, so steering feels consistent whether it is full or empty. The optional spot spray gun handles trim work, so nobody has to carry a backpack sprayer.
Does a new operator need less training?
PermaGreen says most operators are comfortable with basic operation within a few hours. The spray rate is regulated by ground speed rather than walking pace, so a new operator does not have to hold a steady walk to keep the rate right. PermaGreen says this mechanical regulation gives consistent results regardless of operator experience, which makes new employees easier to train. For tight spaces, or a new operator's first days, the handlebars lower for walk-behind operation.

How does the Triumph keep the application rate consistent?
The sprayer comes pre-calibrated for parallel passes on 7-foot centers at 1 quart per 1,000 square feet. Spray rate and spreader output adjust automatically to match ground speed, and the two preset gears hold the calibration settings, so driving faster does not change the application rate. Spraying needs no pressure gauges: the operator shifts into High or Low gear, picks Broadcast (11 to 13 feet) or Trim (3 feet) and engages the throttle.
On the spreader side, the patented PermaGreen Agitator prevents clogging and material bridging in the hopper, and a third-hole shut-off and a side deflector handle edging.
What about spraying in wind?
PermaGreen describes the Triumph's spray system as a patented single low-drift nozzle with no boom. A low-drift nozzle does not change the rules: follow the product label's directions on wind and drift whatever you spray with.
How much more can one operator cover?
PermaGreen's product FAQ puts the Triumph at about 4 acres per hour, or one acre in 15 minutes, and says most operators treat 10 or more additional lawns per day compared with walk-behind equipment. The 150-lb hopper and the 12-gallon liquid system each treat up to an acre per fill, and at 35.5 inches wide the Triumph fits through standard 36-inch gates. Your own number depends on route density, property size and product mix, so time it on your own routes.
Can equipment keep technicians on its own?
Equipment can help, but it is not a retention plan by itself. Pay, hours and management are separate problems that a machine does not touch. Treat any change in fatigue, injuries or retention on your crew as something to watch for on your own routes, not something to assume.
